Contingency keys are digital certificate-based keys that an administrator can have automatically included in the recipient list whenever Smartcrypt does strong encryption. Being able to access certificates on directory servers makes it much more convenient to do strong certificate-based encryption, as you can encrypt for a set of recipients without needing to have the certificate for each recipient on your own machine.
